Susan G. Komen Ocean City Race for the Cure

2014 Komen Maryland Ocean City Race for the Cure
The 3rd Annual Susan G. Komen Ocean City Race for the Cure took place on April 13, 2014 and was a huge success! Ocean City was “painted pink”, as many businesses entered into the contest for the best pink decorations. There were many fun events all weekend! Seacrets held a celebration party on Friday, Skate for the Cure took place at The Carousel on Saturday and Planet Maze was only $15 for two hours of unlimited fun! The event also included a timed 5k with awards for top finishers and a 1-mile family walk. One of our very own employees Elaine Zongker had a team and they participated in the event! The Pink Drive to Inspire Truck was also at the Susan G. Komen Ocean City Race! Many signed the truck to support the fight against breast cancer! Susan G Komen has a vision of a world without breast cancer. Their promise is to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find cures. Susan G. Komen was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor the memory of her sister Susan G. Komen who died from breast cancer at the age of 36. For the past 25 years the Susan G. Komen foundation has played a critical role in every major advance in the fight against breast cancer. They have transformed the way the world talks about and treats this disease. Their contributions include; more early detection, more hope, more research, and more survivors. Nearly 75 percent of women over 40 years old now receive regular mammograms, the single most effective tool for detecting breast cancer early. The federal government now devotes more than $900 million each year to breast cancer research, treatment, and prevention, compared to $30 million in 1982! America’s 2.3 million breast cancer survivors, the largest group of cancer survivors in the U.S. are a living testament to the power of society and science to save lives. 2014 Komen Maryland Ocean City Race for the Cure Without a cure for breast cancer 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will continue to be diagnosed with breast cancer. Also an estimated 5 million Americans will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 1 million could die over the next 25 years. An estimated 25 million women around the world will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 10 million could die over the next 25 years.

Talbot Goes Purple

Talbot Goes Purple

“We’re in the middle of the deadliest drug epidemic in our history - and much of it starts with improper use of prescription painkillers. I believe we need to start teaching our kids these pills are basically synthetic heroin and WILL lead to heroin addiction.” - Joe Gamble, Talbot County Sheriff Talbot Goes Purple is a program meant to engage the community and help youth stand up against substance abuse. Through the creation of purple clubs in our local high schools, students will learn that they don’t need drugs or alcohol. We encourage our community and youth to ‘Go Purple’ as a sign that they take a stand against substance abuse. Our community needs to start having a conversation about the abuse of prescription drugs. 91 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose, and it is our goal to rid Talbot County of this issue. Talbot Goes Purple is a campaign where the Talbot County Sheriff’s Office and Tidewater Rotary team up with Talbot County Schools and the Mid-Shore Community Foundation to spread awareness of how dangerous it is to abuse prescription drugs. On September 19th and September 20th, former NBA basketball player Chris Herren will be running two in-school assemblies in addition to a community event at 7:00 p.m. on September 19th. Chris Herren nearly ruined his life with prescription drug abuse that slowly turned into a heroin addiction. Herren can speak firsthand about how awful drug abuse is and how dangerous it could be to your life. Herren has now been clean and sober for almost a decade and spreads his story to communities in need. We are looking forward to hearing and learning from his story. This September, Talbot Goes Purple and we hope that you can join in celebrating sobriety and solidarity against heroin use.

United for a Cure

United for a Cure

The Preston Automotive Group is united for a cure the entire month of October, as our stores are banding together in a combined effort to support the fight against breast cancer. Our goal is to not only spread awareness of breast cancer and how to prevent it but also to raise funds for the research and development of a cure for this disease. We are partnering with the American Cancer Society to battle this illness that 1 in 8 women will face in their lifetime. We hope this cause will aid those who have fallen victim to breast cancer by funding research for a cure. During the month of October, your friends at the Preston Automotive Group will be giving away a free pink frog with every purchase of a new or used vehicle. These pink frogs are exclusive limited edition versions of everyone's favorite car dealing amphibian.  So hurry in and help spread awareness of breast cancer and the importance of regular check-ups. Early detection is critical when fighting breast cancer, and by spreading awareness, we hope that people do what they can to get checked out for this illness during the United for a Cure event. From October 19th to October 22nd, your friends at the Preston Autoplex will be donating $100 to the American Cancer Society with every single new vehicle purchased. This money is donated to fund research efforts to attempt to find a way we can rid the world of this terrible disease. These financial efforts are also to help spread awareness of breast cancer and how important it is to take preventative measures. Help us, and the millions of volunteers nationwide, in raising funds for breast cancer research, life-saving education, and essential patient services for those suffering from the illness.
