Taking proper care of your tires can not only save you money on many tire expenses but it is also much safer. At the Preston Autoplex  we have four service centers who can assist you with any tire maintenance or vehicle care you may need!  If you are in the Salisbury, Maryland area we have a service center located at Pittsville Ford!

Tire

Tire pressure is the most common cause for unnecessary tire failure.  Without proper tire pressure, tires are subject to tire stress, irregular wear, and can cause loss of vehicle control or even accidents.  An interesting fact we have found is that a tire may not appear to be flat but could have lost up to 50% of its air pressure!  This is why you need to always check your tire pressure, if you just take a look at your tire you may think it is fine when in fact it is going flat.  In order to check your tire pressure all you need is a tire gauge.  Make sure that when you are checking the tire pressure that the tires are cool, even if you have only driven a mile your tires could still be warm.  Don’t forget to check your spare tire as well!!

Alignment is also important in taking the proper care of your tires.  Poor alignment can cause a vehicle to pull to one side or the other and also cause the steering wheel to shake unnecessarily.  Hitting a curb or hitting a pothole can cause your alignment to be thrown off which then will cause wear on your tires.  When your tire has uneven wear it is more susceptible to blow out or have a shortened lifespan.  You should periodically have a service center check your alignment! At Preston Automotive Group we offer free alignment checks, bring your vehicle in today to see if you need to have your tires aligned!

It is a good idea to regularly rotate your vehicles tires so that they wear evenly and have a longer life.  Tires should be rotated about every 5,000 miles.  Rotating your tires means that you switch the tires in a pattern among the wheel positions of the vehicle.  This is an important task because the front tires have different responsibilities then the rear tires.  Different tires also carry different amounts of weight.  Doing tire rotations can slow down uneven tread wear by evening out the differences.  A common used pattern when rotating tires on a front wheel drive vehicle is to move the tires in an X-pattern.  The left front tire trades places with the right rear and the right front trades places with the left rear.

You should get in the habit of inspecting and measuring your thread.  If the thread on your tires is wearing in certain spots rapidly or unusually, this could mean that your vehicle doesn’t have optimum grip on the road and could be unsafe in adverse conditions.   Ask Preston Ford how the tread looks during your tire rotation or free alignment checks!  Tires must be replaced when the tread is worn down to 1/16 of an inch.  A test that will let you know if you are driving with the right amount of tread on your tires is to place a penny in the tread groove.  If part of Lincoln’s head is covered by the tread you’re driving with the correct amount of tread.  If you can see all of his head then you should buy a new tire.  Built in tread indicators are narrow strips of smooth rubber across the tread, this will appear when the tread is worn down to 1/16.  This makes it easy for the driver to tell when tires need to be replaced.

Gas mileage is an important selling point in vehicles.  The better the gas mileage the more money you save at the gas pump!  The Lincoln MKX gets 19 MPG city and 26MPG highway, the Lexus RX 350 gets 18 MPG city and 25 MPG highway.

The Lincoln MKX also takes the cake when it comes to available features that are standard with purchase.  In the Lincoln MKX rear parking aid, front reading lamps, leather seats, heated front seats, and the conventional spare tire are all standard!  However on the Lexus RX 350 the front reading lamps and conventional spare tire are not even available.  The other features such as rear parking aid, leather seats and heated front seats are available but not standard.

Mazda is releasing its new Mazda6 with diesel engine in the spring of 2014.  The original release date was supposed to be at the end of this year in December.  The release date has been pushed back to accommodate for final emissions testing and certification.  The Mazda6 Diesel will feature a 2.2 liter Sky-D engine which boosts fuel economy by 20 percent over the current 2.2 liter diesel.  The Mazda6 diesel also meets the Euro 6 and U.S. Tier 2 Bin 5 emissions standards without using any NOx after treatment!

2014 Mazda6

2014 Mazda6

Mazda decreased the compression ratio on the Diesel engine from 16.3:1 to 14:1.  The compression ratio is the ratio of the maximum and minimum volume in the cylinder of an internal combustion engine.  This value is the lowest in the world among diesel engines according to Mazda.  By decreasing the compression ratio this reduces cylinder pressures and therefore temperatures which reduces NOx production and also allows the fuel to mix better avoiding locally rich areas that produce soot.  Mazda has claimed that the lessened friction from the reduced cylinder pressure alone is worth about a five percent gain in fuel economy.

There is a downside to lowering the compression ratio in a diesel, during warm-up the engine temperature can be too low to support proper combustion.  The result to this could be the engine misfiring.  Mazda needed to solve this issue so they added a two-stage valve lift system on the exhaust side in order to be able to create additional valve overlap.  This will cause the hot exhaust gases to be drawn back into the next cylinder to warm it up.

The fuel economy on the diesel engine is excellent! The Mazda6 Diesel will get an impressive 31 to 33 mpg in the city and 43 mpg on the highway.  The engine runs quietly in the mid-revs, there is still the characteristic low-frequency rumble but if you play the stereo or even turn the a/c fan beyond halfway up you will hardly even notice it!  An unusual feature on the diesel is that it will run to 2500 rpm which will be helped by a two stage turbo system.

Mazda Diesel Engine

Mazda Diesel Engine

The new automatic transmission which much like the diesel engine is a part of Mazda’s fuel saving Skyactiv program!  The Mazda6 also has a big capacitor that stores energy from the alternator during deceleration.  It can suck up the charge faster than a battery.  Mazda claims that this keeps enough energy stored to run all electrical systems nearly all the time.  Therefore, the alternator is seldom driven by actual diesel power.  It is driven by mostly wasted momentum!

The rest of the car has a rigid body, agile handling, good grip, resistance to understeer, nice styling, chic interior and strong ergonomics.

At Preston Mazda in Hurlock, Maryland we have a large inventory of the 2014 Mazda6 and would love to get you into yours today! We welcome customers from all across Maryland, including Annapolis, Maryland, Easton, Maryland, Pocomoke, Maryland and Salisbury, Maryland! Continue to check our Facebook page for updates on when you might see the Mazda6 Diesel on our lot!

Winter is here and there are a few easy steps you can take to get your car ready for the cold, rain and snow that might come your way this winter.

  1. Get the right kind of oil change. If you are approaching that time for an oil change then do not procrastinate!  The oil used should have the right thickness for your vehicle at this time of the year.  When the weather changes and gets colder the oil in your vehicle gets thicker.  If oil becomes too thick it will not do a good job of keeping your engine lubricated.  If you aren’t sure of which kind of oil to use check your owner’s manual or come visit any of our service locations at the Preston Automotive Group!
  2. Always make sure that you can see.  When it starts snowing or raining you need to make sure that your windshield wipers are in tip top shape!  Wiper blades usually work effectively for about one year.  Don’t forget to get new ones put on if you have had yours for a year.  You also want to make sure that your windshield washer reservoir is filled with washer fluid. Using water won’t clean your windshield in the winter because it can freeze if it is cold enough out!  Make sure to also check if your heater and defroster are working correctly.  If they are not working correctly have someone take a look at them before winter comes around in full swing!!
  3. Examine your belts and hoses.  In the winter months, cold weather can have a huge effect on your belts and hoses so they need attention too just like the rest of your vehicle does.  Have them checked for wear and tear!
  4. Give your battery some tender-loving care!  This is the perfect time of year to make sure your battery’s posts and connections are corrosion free.  If your battery is more than three years old or getting close to being three years old the stop by one of our certified service centers or body shops and test its ability to hold a charge. Tire Pressure
  5. Check your tire pressure.  Your tires must be properly inflated to ensure you will have the best traction while driving on the road.  Traction is often severely jeopardized when it is raining outside or snowing outside.  When the rain first starts that is when the road will become the most slippery.
  6. Think about switching to snow tires.  If you live in a hilly place that gets its fair share of snow then you should consider getting snow tires.  You can also get chains for your tires so that you are less likely to slip on the road while driving in the winter.  When you are looking for snow tires look around and ask a lot of questions there might be fees for installing, mounting and balancing.
  7. Get the antifreeze mixture just right.  In the winter months you should aim for having about a 50-50 mix of antifreeze and water inside your radiator.  This will help prevent the mixture from freezing even if it is insanely cold outside.
  8. Prepare an emergency kit.  Store these items in your trunk when the weather gets cold just in case you decide to go on a last minute road trip! The essentials that you should put in your truck are a blanket, extra boots and gloves, an extra set of warm clothes, extra water and food, ice scraper, tire chains, a spare tire, tire-changing equipment, first aid kit and a flashlight.  There are many more items that you can add to your trunk as well but are not listed here.

If you need assistance in completing any of these tasks visit our service centers at Preston Automotive Group!  We can surely help you get your vehicle ready for the winter.

The Ford versus Chevy rivalry is the automotive equivalent of the rivalry between the Baltimore Orioles and the New York Yankees.  As today’s technology and design rapidly change vehicles like the Ford Fusion and Taurus have little to do with their predecessors.  This excludes two very special cars, the Ford Mustang and the Chevrolet Camaro.  These four seat, rear wheel drive cars have been battling it out since roughly 1967.

Mustang_vs_Camaro

In the early 1960’s Ford decided to build a cheap, sporty, attractive car to attract younger buyers.  The Mustang debuted at the New York World’s Fair on April 17, 1964.  The car became the fastest selling vehicle in car history.  When Chevrolet saw the remarkable success of the Mustang they launched the Camaro in 1967.  The two cars were the perfect rivals, while quite roomy by modern standards they both passed as compact cars at the time.  The winning formula was that both cars rely on sporty styling and optimal V8 engines.

In a comparison between two of the most iconic sports car in the business, the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro and the 2014 Ford Mustang, the Mustang is given the edge according to TheCarConnection.com.  The Mustang has incredible performance, a more sophisticated body style and state of the art technology throughout.  The 2014 Ford Mustang takes the cake and eats it too against the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro.

Mustangs and Camaros have been battling it out in showrooms, at stoplights, and also on the raceway.  This rivalry is distinguished from other great muscle cars because it didn’t end with the oil shortages of 1970.  The performance of the cars declined but both cars survived.  When horsepower recovered in the 1980’s and 1990’s the pony cars battled again.  In the dawn of the new millennium versions of each car left the factory with over 300 horsepower!

The Camaro ranked only an 8.4 out of ten whereas the Ford Mustang ranked 8.4 out of ten.  There were many features that handed the mustang the win in 2014, these include the fact that it is by far one of the best performance cars in value with a price tag that is also several thousand lower than the Camaro.  The Mustang has a well-balanced and quick V6 engine which adds a modern twist to its American Classic body design.  The quality of the ride in the Mustang is as equally outstanding.  The Mustang also garnered a better MPG than the Camaro earning itself an estimated 15 MPG in the city and 29 MPG on the highway.

The 2014 Mustang impressed everyone with both its interior and exterior updates, making the Ford a more-refined muscle car.  The Mustang however doesn’t drop its roots as it maintains the classic body style of the original concept Mustang from the 60’s.  The new 2014 Mustang delivers an astounding 420 horesepower.  The Camaro is a sports car however, the Mustang is still the most recognizable vehicle in America and wins in a battle to be the best.

At Preston Ford in Hurlock, Maryland we currently have ten 2014 Ford Mustangs in stock!  If you are in the Annapolis, MD, Dover, DE or Salisbury, MD area and looking for America’s most recognizable car come into Preston Ford today and take your pick!
