You’ve been searching everywhere to find the right vehicle for you, and you’ve finally found it. Now comes the part where most Americans struggle, paying for it. As, many of us have been told countless times buying a car is the second most important thing you’ll likely buy next to your home. Our finance & insurance managers in the Preston Automotive Group are often asked, “Should I finance or lease my new car?” The answer depends on your current situation and what your ultimate purpose and goal for this vehicle is. Let's start with a quick survey, ask yourself the following questions: Do I have a small down payment or even no down payment? Do I take care of my vehicles, inside and out? Do I drive between 10,000 to 15,000 annually? Do I like to trade cars every 3 years or so? If you answered yes to all 4 of those questions, leasing sounds ideal for you. First and foremost, “What is leasing?” Dictionary.com defines leasing as granting the temporary possession or use of (lands, tenements, etc.) to another, usually for compensation at a fixed rate. You certainly get more car, for less money when it comes to leasing! Leasing gives your average joe the option and affordability to drive that $30,000 vehicle that would typically be out of his price range if he were to finance it. Unlike finance payments, lease payments are based on a percentage of the vehicle price. The buyer pays the difference between the base price of the vehicle and the expected value of the vehicle at lease end, often referred to as the residual value. Let's say for instance that the car you picked has a base price of $30,000. The market has suggested that the vehicle will be worth $16,000 at the end of the lease term, meaning you would only make payments on the remaining$14,000 as opposed to the $30,000. Technology is getting to be a huge factor in the decision making on whether or not to lease. With so many new innovations happening in the world of cars yearly, it's very difficult to not want the best when the best comes out. Leasing allows you to trade in your vehicle at the end of your lease term with no penalty and best of all no negative equity. As long as the lease is under the allotted pre-determined mileage and free from excessive wear and tear you will be able to walk away free and not upside down on a loan. Although you can select lease terms ranging from 12 months to 48 months, the average term for an American consumer is 36 months (3 years). Did you answer no to most or all of the survey mentioned earlier? Then the option to finance is most likely is the option for you. The best thing about financing is you are actually using someone else's money to purchase the vehicle, and once the last payment has been signed, sealed and delivered, you own the vehicle for good. The desire to customize plays a huge role in the reasoning behind financing. The vehicle is yours to modify or customize as you like. Air intakes, lift kits and sometimes window tinting are very frowned upon and could be very costly in vehicle leasing.  This goes hand and hand with wear and tear. You will not be penalized for any wear and tear on the car once you have taken ownership of it. Typically on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, the finance option is exercised 8 out of 10 times. Why is that? When asked around a majority of Preston Automotive customers stated that, “I drive too many miles and I don't have time to worry about minor wear and tear that could cost me more in the long run.” Believe it or not there are additional warranties for exceeding mileage and excessive wear and tear on a lease. When it comes to financing vs leasing, there’s no definite answer on which one you should choose. Certain things you need to consider are your budget, driving needs, lifestyle and credit history before you decide whether to buy or lease. It's almost 2016, well not quite, but car manufacturers are always ahead of the game. The Preston Autoplex has already seen some of the most talked about 2016 models hit the showroom floor. The Preston Automotive Group will organize a walk for the March of Dimes to take place on the grounds of the Preston Autoplex on May 3rd, 2015.  We have done this for many years and this year David Wilson Jr. will be the chairman for the event.  The March of Dimes March for Babies official mission reads, “We help moms have full-term pregnancies and research the problems that threaten the health of babies.”  It’s a fantastic cause and we are excited to be participating again! The event will kickoff not on the 3rd but rather Saturday, May 2nd at dusk with an awesome fireworks display from Zambelli Fireworks in the field behind the Autoplex.  The walk, as mentioned, will take place on May 3rd.  Registration will begin at 12pm and the walk will begin promptly afterward at 1PM.  The course will start and end at the Preston Autoplex and travel 1.5 miles through the town of Preston and back — totaling 3 miles.  After the walk, at around 2PM, we will have Mike Hines and his band The Look perform and there will be food from local eateries.  In addition, there will be activities for kids as well as mascot appearances by Sherman Shorebird and the Preston Frog! Join the Preston Automotive Group in celebrating Car Care Awareness Month!  If you think about it, your vehicle is probably your second largest investment (second to your house if you own one).  If you have a vehicle you probably use it to drive to work every day, transport the kids to their activities, and get you to and from various other places, right?  And if it broke down or started to work improperly, then you might be in kind of a pickle, right?  Well, the goal of Car Care Awareness Month is to make sure people know how they should be taking care of their vehicle. Last year during Nationwide Car Care Inspections, 84% failed at least one component of the inspection.  That means nearly every one of these drivers were potentially driving around in an unsafe vehicle.  Now, that number could be reflecting failures such as faulty taillights, low washer fluid, or some other small issue, but nonetheless it is a safety hazard if it causes your vehicle to fail an inspection.  There are all kinds of numbers that would scare you such as nearly 1 in 5 vehicles needed a new air filter, or 13% had the “check engine” light on.  But here’s the bottom line: most people don’t know what kind of regular maintenance should be completed on a car at each specific milestone. Another part of Car Care Awareness’ mission is to give you the knowledge so you can detect small issues early before they turn into big problems.  Neglected vehicle care almost always means higher costs down the line.  The results found by carcare.org show that the majority of vehicle owners could save a substantial amount of money by being proactive in their vehicle maintenance. So, our goal this month, alongside the Car Care Council, will be to inform you of the best way to look after one of your largest investments.  Whether you have a new or pre-owned vehicle, there are certain steps and precautions to take, and that is what we will be highlighting all month long!

Several years ago, GM, and their major US brands like Chevy, Buick, Cadillac, and GMC, upped their Powertrain Warranty coverage to 5 years/100,000 miles.  This was a big selling point for these vehicles because at the time there weren’t many other automakers offering this type of coverage.  However, it was just made known that they would be reducing that number to 5 years/60,000 miles on their 2016 models.  Nearly a 50% reduction is crazy and owners are reacting negatively. Now there’s a couple things to know.  First of all, you may be saying to yourself ‘who even drives an average of 20,000 miles/year?’  Well for those that live in a more rural area such as the Eastern Shore peninsula of Maryland and Delaware, driving 20k miles/year can be very common.  In more urbanized places like Baltimore and DC it is obviously less common to rack up that kind of yearly mileage.  Secondly, for those that aren’t sure exactly what a Powertrain Warranty covers, think of it as basically covering all the “Go Parts.”  Specifically it would be the engine, transmission, and drivetrain parts, which are all the parts that get the power from the engine to the wheels then to the ground including the transfer case and axle assemblies.  All of these parts are not supposed to fail or go bad generally within the first 5-6 years of a vehicles life and that is why most Powertrain Warranties fall within those amount of years as you can see in the chart below. However, one automaker that blows everyone else out of the water with their Powertrain Warranty is Hyundai.  Hyundai is somewhat famous for their 10 year/100,000 mile Powertrain Warranty on all new vehicles.  You can see it written in big letters on the side of our Hyundai building at the Preston Autoplex in Hurlock, MD.  As a matter of fact, pre-owned Hyundai's come with a Powertrain Warranty equal to that of what new GM's will have - 5 years/60,000 miles.  And if you find a Certified Pre-Owned Hyundai, it will actually come with a 10 year/100,000 mile Powertrain Warranty, same as new Hyundai's. So, Hyundai’s warranty still protects you well after GM’s brands (and most others for that matter) stop protecting you.  We love that Hyundai is a part of the Preston Automotive Group and right now we have over 230 new Hyundai’s on our lot!  So, we have a great selection, and each of those come with their own 10 year/100,000 mile Powertrain Warranty.  As proved in the list above, you can’t beat Hyundai’s warranty coverage.

Preston Automotive Group donates time and money to several charities and organizations throughout the year, and coming up in March, Daria Wilson, Daughter of the Preston Automotive Group President Dave Wilson Sr., will be Dancing for the Dogs.  This annual event raises awareness and money for local animal shelters and animal rescues of Talbot and Caroline County of Maryland. U.S. News & World Report just released their annual list of Best Cars for the Money and Hyundai, Mazda, and Nissan cleaned up.  Hyundai and Mazda each had two vehicles on the list and Nissan had one.  Their list highlights vehicles across 21 different automotive classes with the best combination of positive reviews and long-term ownership costs.  Specifically, they take the average price paid from TrueCar.com and five-year cost-to-own data from Vincentric combined with the U.S. News Best Cars rankings data.  So let’s get right into it! There was only one winner in the car class that we sell as a part of the Preston Automotive Group and it was the 2015 Hyundai Sonata.  The Sonata won for the Midsize Car category.  This is a true standout car with its new outward design and upgrades to the engine and various mechanical parts that many people don’t really see.  We have over 70 Sonata’s in stock right now at our Preston Hyundai Dealer of Maryland. The remaining four vehicles we sell that made the list came from the SUV and Minivan category.  The first one we’ll talk about the 2015 Nissan Murano, which won for the 2-Row SUV class.  The new Murano looks amazing with its curvy exterior, mean-looking lights, mesmerizing front grille, and huge touchscreen system inside.  We have a handful of these at our Maryland Nissan Dealer on the Eastern Shore, Preston Nissan. The winner for the best 3-Row SUV was the 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe.  This SUV is top notch and its 80 cubic feet of maximum cargo capacity is a great value for the money.  It’s certainly not tops in its class in terms of cargo capacity, but it certainly is tops for the value it brings; thus, the reason why it is on this list! The two Mazda’s to make the list were the CX-9 and Mazda5 in the Large SUV and Minivan classes, respectively.  The 2015 Mazda CX-9 just recently won another award for Most Popular Large Crossover SUV, so you know this vehicle is legitimate.  It is stylish on the outside and functional with a large feel on the inside.  The 2015 Mazda5 admittedly doesn’t win many awards, but it is extremely functional and you get a fantastic amount of bang for your buck with this minivan.  You may not think of this vehicle as a minivan because it is smaller, lower to the ground, and more stylish than the stereotypical “Soccer Mom” minivans that usually come to mind, but it is in fact classified as a minivan.  With three rows of seats and decent cargo space, this minivan is tops in terms of value in its class. Preston Mazda, a two-time consecutive Gold Cup Mazda Dealer (the highest honor a dealership can achieve), has a small inventory of these vehicles now, but are receiving more every week. There were several other vehicles from the Preston Automotive Group which were finalists too.  The finalists – or honorable mentions if you will – in the overall Car category were as follows: Ford Fiesta, Fusion Hybrid, Mustang, C-Max Hybrid, Mazda Mazda3, and Hyundai Genesis.  The three Preston finalists for the SUV and Minivan categories were the Mazda CX-5, Nissan Rogue, and Lincoln MKC.  At last, the lone finalist in the Trucks category was of course the Ford F-150. *Now, remember this list is naming Best Cars for the Money – in other words, Best Value.  So, when you see the F-150 and Mustang and other popular cars only making it onto the “honorable mentions,” remember that, while being great cars, they just may not be as great of a value as the cars that were ultimately picked by U.S. News.

The day after the Super Bowl is for talking about the big game at work, recanting the crucial plays, and maybe best of all discussing everyone’s favorite Super Bowl Commercials.  This year there were some pretty powerful spots; including two from Nissan, one controversial ad from Nationwide Insurance, a PSA by coalition No More, and several others.  Serious was the name of the game, and we were right in line with our three spots on NBC – WRDE. Our spots were based around thanking our valued customers of the Delmarva area and beyond.  Our message even got picked up by those at Edmunds.com, who wrote an article about us and what we were trying to accomplish.  Our commercials spots also got great reception with people liking, sharing, and commenting on them via Facebook during and after the game.  Some of the top comments included things like, “THAT is a GREAT commercial – thank you!” and “What an awesome local commercial from Preston Frogz!”  We were even able to use pictures and video of local people in the ads.  Whether it was military or EMS personnel or members of the community at our various events, we got to connect our message back to them.  You can view all three of our spots below or on our Preston Frogz YouTube page. It’s that time of year again for the big game – Super Bowl XLIX.  As you know this game will be played between the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks on Sunday February 1, 2015.  We know there will certainly be a ton of viewers glued to their televisions on Sunday night.  Last year 167 Million people watched the big game, making it the most watched television broadcast in U.S. history, overtaking the Super Bowl from two years prior by approximately 200,000 viewers.  Bottom line, this year’s game is projected to set a new record and advertisers have certainly taken notice. Historically, people watch the broadcast for the Super Bowl Commercials as much as the actual game sometimes.  The commercials have been getting funnier and more creative each and every year.  This year Preston Automotive Group will have three Super Bowl Commercials featured on NBC – WRDE.  We were inspired this year by the service men and women in our communities.  From Firefighters to Police Officers, EMS to Military Personnel, we wanted to form our message around you; thanking you for everything you do for us.  We created Preston Cares in order to convey this message to you. Ward’s Auto is a website all about providing information about the global auto industry to consumers, so they can make more informed purchases.  Every year, Ward’s most anticipated award is its 10 Best Engines list.  They don’t rank them from 1-10, but rather give out the same award to all of the top 10.  These don’t have to be the biggest engines either; and this year they are saying this list is “by far the most diverse and technically advanced pool of honorees in 21 years.”  Ward’s 10 Best Engines competition pits the latest engines available in the U.S. market against the returning winners.  Four engines returned from last year and one of them is a Ford! As the only Ford Engine to make the list, this 1.0-liter EcoBoost 3-cylinder beauty has a big job to do representing the biggest American Motor Company all by itself.  This is in fact the third year in a row this engine has made it onto Ward’s list of powertrain excellence.  This tiny but capable engine belongs to one car and one car only: the Ford Fiesta.  This car can’t compete with others on this list when it comes to horsepower and speed, but it does take the cake on top fuel economy. This extraordinarily small engine only has three cylinders but packs a punch on fuel economy by getting an EPA estimated 31 mpg city and 43 mpg highway, with 36 mpg combined!  That is truly unmatched in a strictly gasoline fueled vehicle.  This engine is optional on the 2015 Ford Fiesta SE Sedan or Hatchback models only and Preston Ford has two of these tiny monsters at the moment which you can see by clicking on the above link. Another Preston Automotive Group brand, Hyundai, had one of their Crossovers make it onto Ward’s 10 Best Engine list.  This vehicle runs completely on a fuel cell battery and creates zero emissions.  It’s only available in Southern California at the moment, and the vehicle we’re talking about is the 2015 Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell!  This is Hyundai’s first-ever hydrogen-powered vehicle. It runs on a 100 kW (max) fuel cell electric motor and is consistent with most gasoline powered vehicles in terms of the amount of miles that can be traveled on one charge.  It gets an estimated 265 miles per charge, which is comparative to what other similar crossovers achieve in miles per tank of gasoline.  It also is years ahead of other Electric Vehicles (EVs) in terms of time it takes to charge.  The Tucson Fuel Cell will completely charge up from nothing in less than 10 minutes, whereas the next closest EV takes over three hours!  The only problem for us is that this revolutionary crossover will be stuck in Southern California until the country’s fueling infrastructure expands to fit the up-and-coming demand. The 2015 Hyundai Tucson is a five-passenger compact crossover SUV offered in three trim levels: GLS, SE and Limited.  The Tucson is a great choice in the compact crossover class because of its small engine and fantastic maneuverability. The base model GLS comes standard with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and several other basic interior amenities such as iPod/USB connectivity, privacy glass on the rear windows, and full power accessories.  The available options include automatic headlights, 4.3-inch touchscreen display, and a rearview camera. The middle model is the SE and it receives the bigger 2.4L engine, fog lights, a sport body, heated front seats, and front-to-back roof rails. And finally if you step up to the Limited model you’ll get chrome exterior trim, keyless entry and ignition, leather upholstery, as well as Hyundai’s Blue Link telematics system.  The Technology Package is optional for the top model and it includes some really nice features.  With the Tech Package you’d have a panoramic sunroof (meaning the roof is basically all glass) and a 7-inch touchscreen with navigation. Both of these aforementioned engines give back decent gas mileage for the compact crossover class.  The smaller 2.0L achieves 25MPG combined and the 2.4L does virtually the same at 24MPG combined.  It has “get up” though because it took the 2015 Tucson 8.4 seconds to get from 0 to 60 mph, which is better than average for a compact crossover with a base engine.  During its other testing done by Edmunds.com, it was found to have a quiet and comfortable ride on the highway and even navigate tight city streets with the ease of a hatchback sedan. There were many announcements and vehicles unveiled in Detroit last week at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS).  Many of them were by brands like Ford, Nissan, Hyundai, and Mazda, which are brands that we carry at our dealerships of Maryland and Delaware as part of the Preston Automotive Group. The biggest bang at this year’s Auto Show was made by the Ford Motor Company within the first 2 hours of the first day.  They unveiled three performance vehicles that hadn’t been seen before.  Those included the Ford F-150 Raptor, Shelby Mustang GT350R, and the Ford GT supercar.  It rocked the automotive world for the remainder of the week’s show.  The first two of these three vehicles are speculated to be available for purchase sometime this year (2015).  Whereas, the Ford supercar will only be starting production in 2016 as stated by Bill Ford and Mark Fields in a back-and-forth style banter on the stage in Detroit. The next big story came from Nissan USA.  They brought in their top dog, CEO Carlos Ghosn, to introduce their potential new top dog vehicle – the 2016 Nissan Titan.  He highlighted two main ideas; One being the fact that Nissan was creating a brand new class of full-size pickups, and the other being that it was All-American from conception to construction.  We learned this new Nissan Titan will be powered by a Cummins 5.0L Diesel Engine and it will tow nearly as much as the F-150 at over 12,000lbs. The third biggest announcement we learned from came from Hyundai USA.  They released pictures of their concept truck/SUV hybrid that they are calling the Santa Cruz. It first reminded us of the Santa Fe in terms of its front fascia, and overall made us think back to the Subaru Baja from several years ago. As of now it is merely a concept, meaning it’s not slated for production. Yet. It is a slick looking truck and made big headlines in Detroit this year, so we look forward to following the development of this new venture in the months to come! The final thing we learned came from Mazda USA. Now, technically this has been known since November 2014, but at the NAIAS Mazda rolled out its first generation Subcompact Crossover Utility Vehicle (CUV), the Mazda CX-3.  Mazda’s North America CEO, Jim O’Sullivan, notes that “When there’s not a lot of manufacturers offering B-SUV’s, it’s a competitive advantage for us.” Mazda is looking for the 2016 CX-3 to be a better seller than the much anticipated 2016 Miata MX-5.
