Preston Automotive new laws

New Laws Will Impact Maryland Drivers

Several new laws went into effect in Maryland on October 1, 2014.  A couple of those laws will directly impact drivers in Maryland. The first one is referred to as Jake’s Law and it strengthens the penalties for distracted driving.  Anyone who texts or reads messages while driving and causes an accident that kills or seriously injures another will face up to a year in jail plus a $5,000 fine.  That will be in addition to any other violations you may get charged with such as involuntary man slaughter or reckless driving. This law was named after Jake Owen who was killed in a crash in 2011 by a driver who was talking on his cell phone and rear ended the parents’ car, killing the 5 year old boy who was in the back seat.  Its aim is to be an extension of the handheld device law that prohibits talking on your cell phone while driving. No matter how many laws are put into place, there will still be people that think they need to send that last message or make that quick phone call while driving.  Check out this powerful public service announcement regarding texting and driving. The other law concerning drivers in Maryland is an addendum to the Move-Over Law that is already in place.  You already know that you must move over or slow down for emergency vehicles on the side of the road.  That includes police cars, ambulances, fire trucks, etc.  And now you will have to move over for tow trucks as well.  This new law in will require all vehicles to move over into the next lane, or simply slow down if there is no lane to move into.  It's normally a common courtesy, but failure to comply will result in a minimum $100 fine or 1 point on your license. The common denominator between these two new laws is safety.  This is another step toward making our roadways safer here in Maryland and maybe even other states will follow our lead.  In the event you do get in an accident, trust Preston Automotive Towing to come get your vehicle and one of our three auto body shops to make the repairs at the best price around!

Vehicle Safety and Recall Awareness

Vehicle recalls are something that happen more often than you might think, but owners may not always know their recalled vehicle needs to be repaired.  Just to be clear, I’m not referring to any major recalls like the Toyota sticking gas pedal incident or the Firestone tires on Ford SUV’s because of course those are recalls that everyone hears about on national news.  I’m talking about those smaller recalls that just about every car brand has at one time or another for things such as faulty airbags or switches for example.  So, it is just as important to know about the little recalls as it is to know about the larger ones because they are both threats to your safety.  And now there is any easy way to keep up on those threats with safercar.gov. Safercar.gov is a government website run by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA).  This site exists solely to inform consumers on everything to do with vehicle safety.  From recalls, to investigations, even to common complaints – safercar.gov is the catch-all site to ensure you and your family are safe in your vehicle. There are a couple ways to see if your car is on a recall list.  You could search as specifically as the VIN number or as general as the vehicle year, make, and model.  Regardless of how dependable your make of car usually is, everyone should take a look at this site anyway.  It’s fast, simple and you have nothing to lose except about thirty seconds of your time.  However, if you do end up finding something about your car involving a recalled item, then I’ll bet you’ll be glad you checked.  And even more than that, taking a couple seconds to check for your car could save your life or many others. If you got your car, truck, or SUV from Preston Automotive Group and it turns out to have a recall, no matter how small or large, you can be sure that one of our three auto body shops – in Preston, Snow Hill, or Cambridge – will be able to help get you in-and-out and safely back on the road.

CarPlay

Preston Hyundai Anticipates Apple CarPlay

With the recent iPhone 6 and 6 Plus reveals, there has been a lot of exciting buzz surrounding Apple. Whether it was the two iPhone’s, the Watch, or CarPlay – Apple was surely the topic of discussion at many water coolers around the world. Apple CarPlay, which was officially announced back in March, is a vehicle-based infotainment system which allows drivers to use a number of iOS features through voice activation. At first glance this is nothing new; however, when you consider all the features it will encompass, you are sure to be impressed – and maybe even a little jealous if you aren’t one of the lucky few who have it already. The various features will include hands free calling, message notifications, maps/navigation, and music streaming. Simply using your voice you will be able to make calls and even respond to text messages. Also, the maps feature is perhaps the nicest and most practical part about the whole thing. You will be able to speak a destination, the microphone will pick it up, and it will immediately pull up available routes just as it would on your phone, but this will be much more convenient and safer for most people. There is a very nice webpage Apple has setup to walk you through all these new features that CarPlay makes available. It will surely be a part of every car brand, – or every brand that’s smart at least – but Apple is only introducing it in a select few brands to start out. At this point in time it’s only available in the latest Ferrari models, and obviously not everyone can afford a Ferrari. However, it will be coming to Preston Hyundai in time for some of the later 2015 models! Among those to be included are the Hyundai Sonata’s. The new 2015 Sonata Eco and Sport Editions will have a 5.5” touchscreen coming standard, and that is what will enable use with Apple CarPlay. With this new technology, the Hyundai Sonata is sure to be one of the most sought after sedans coming off of Preston Automotive lots in 2015. Now, you don’t necessarily need a 2015 Sonata in order to use this new CarPlay technology. Pioneer and Alpine audio systems are making it possible to outfit any automobile with CarPlay. One of these systems – excluding installation – will run about $800. So, if you’re like us and can’t wait for Apple CarPlay, you will have these various options coming up in the near future!

Preston Hyundai Maryland Dealer

Preston Hyundai Maryland Dealership Supports Hope on Wheels

In 1998, Hyundai Motor America started Hope on Wheels - a non-profit organization committed to finding a cure for childhood cancer.  Since the conception of this idea 16 years ago, Hyundai has raised nearly 90 million dollars.  This year, Preston is one of 820 Hyundai Dealers in the U.S. to be participating in the annual event. September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, so Preston Automotive Group Owner/President Dave Wilson Sr. has prepared to open up his wallet. Wilson Sr. along with Preston Hyundai will make a donation to the Hope on Wheels program for every Hyundai that is purchased from the Preston lot during the month of September. Not only that, but each of his donations will be matched by Hyundai Motor America! As a result, this is something that Preston Hyundai has been proud to participate in for many years. One of the more ceremonial parts of the Hope on Wheels program are the symbolic handprints. On their website Hope on Wheels states that there is nothing more personal than a handprint.  So, part of this program gives children who are currently battling cancer a chance to have fun and paint their handprint on a White Hyundai Santa Fe. There are several ways that money is being collected.  First and foremost are the donations from dealers matched by Hyundai Motor America. Secondly, there are 5K races setup in select locations around the country where all proceeds will go toward the Hope on Wheels foundation.  There is also branded merchandise with the Hope on Wheels logo for sale on their website.  And of course you could make a donation of any amount by visiting their website as well.  However, if you have been thinking about a new Hyundai then now is the time to buy because Preston Hyundai will only be participating in this program until the end of the month! We encourage you to check out their website and/or video above to find out more about this great foundation.  Also, be sure to use the hashtag #endchildhoodcancer to spread further awareness about this program.  It truly is a wonderful foundation that can have an impact on the lives of thousands of children.  So, make sure to come out to Preston Hyundai to see what we are doing to help this worthy cause with your own eyes.

What you Should Know about Vehicle Recalls

There have recently been an abundance of vehicle recalls on many models.  You should know what to do in the case where your vehicle is recalled, or is recalled for a safety recall.  Recalls are happening more and more often.  In the year 2013 there were 632 recalls which impacted 22 million vehicles according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.  In the year 2014 there have already been more than 120 recalls affecting nearly 13 million cars.  This means this year is on pace to break the previous record which was set ten years ago. Recalls are issued because the defect or possible defect might make the vehicle unsafe.  For any recall, defective parts are placed at no cost to the owner.  Engineering errors which can be both large and small can cause significant defect that can compromise the driver’s safety and require a recall.  These types of errors are usually on specific models produced during a specific period of time at the manufacturing plant. The most common defects include: Wiring or leaks that cause fire Accelerators that break suddenly Ineffective steering parts that may cause a loss of control Air bags that deploy late Faulty seat belts that break An official safety recall notice is sent to vehicle owners at risk.  These owners are typically identified through DMV records.  The notice explains the following things; the safety hazards that may result from the defect, how to fix the defect and eliminate the safety hazard, when the defect repair will be available and how long it will take to be completed, and who to contact in the case of difficulty. Remember that recalls are meant to protect you!  This doesn’t mean you purchased a lousy vehicle.  New vehicles are made with millions of moving parts and mistakes are bound to happen.  Even for the biggest automotive manufacturers, these recalls are meant to fix the wrong doings!  Ignoring a recall is not a good idea, as soon as you are notified you should try to get the recall fixed!

Preston Hyundai is thrilled to offer Maryland and Delaware such a great selection of the 2014 Hyundai Tucson.  They find it hard to keep the Tucson on their lot being as it is such a great choice for a compact SUV.  Not only does Preston Hyundai have a great selection of the Tucson to offer Delaware and Maryland but they also have a great selection of all Hyundai vehicles.

Cars With the Best Leg Room

Some drivers prefer and need a lot of leg room in their vehicles.  We have put together a list of the best vehicles we sell that have great leg room!  The best way to really judge the room in a vehicle is to come test it out yourself.  Get in the vehicle and see if there is enough room for you to move around and drive comfortably. The first car to make the list is the Hyundai Sonata. The Sonata has 45.5 inches of front legroom and 40.0 inches of front headroom!  That gives you a lot of space to stay comfortable.  The raked roofline, shark-fin antenna and sculpted grille give the Sonata the special Hyundai design called Fluidic Sculpture.  The Sonata gets its inspiration of all works of nature.  The interior of the Sonata of course has a ton of leg room but it is also built for your convenience.  Get your dose of sunshine and Vitamin D with the Sonata two sunroof options.  There is the power tilt and slide sunroof or the panoramic sunroof that extends the entire length of the roof.  The Sonata also has an available Electroluminescent Gauge Cluster with color LCD trip computer which gives you important information in a second!  The trip computer also allows you to customize things like having your door lock automatically when you reach a certain speed. The Hyundai Azera also made the list of one of the cars with the best leg room! The Azera has 123.3 cubic feet of interior space!  This allows you to really enjoy your space.  The sleek appearance of the Azera is both energetic and elegant.  Both the driver and the passenger can enjoy plenty of seating options.  This includes front and rear heated seats and ventilated front seats.  The available 12 way adjustable power driver seat which also features an optional seat cushion extension and an integrated Memory System.  This memory system has two memory settings for the seat, side mirrors, and steering column.  There is also ambient lighting that sets the mood.  The available interior lighting system adds soft ambient light that illuminates the cabin. The Nissan Altima also has great leg room!  The exterior of the Altima is very stylish.  The design of the exterior is achieved through laser measured panel fit and sculpted steelwork.  The Altima can also be finished on the exterior the way you would like it.  You can choose between Nissan’s 3.5 liter 270 horsepower engine or the 182 horsepower 4 cylinder engine.  The Altima features zero gravity seats.  NASA research determined the posture astronauts naturally take in the weightlessness of space.  Nissan then used this to design front seats which reduce fatique and create optimal comfort.  Also in the Altima is the Advanced Drive Assist Display.  From turn by turn navigation to caller ID this display does it all for you.  It is designed so that you can get info quickly allowing you to focus on what matters the most which is driving! The last car that makes the list which is available here at the Preston Autoplex. The Ford Fusion has 39.2 inches of front head room and 44.3 inches of front leg room!  Not only are the Ford Fusions big on space but they are also big on MPG.  The technology in the Fusion does everything to make your drive more convenient and pleasant.  The available voice activiated SYNC with MyFord Touch allows you to keep your hands on the wheel while you choose your music and climate control.  The Fusion is also a very safe vehicle and has some of the best Ford technology.  There is an inflatable second row outboard safety belts which help distribute crash force energy across more of the torso than a traditional safety belt.  This helps reduce the risk of energy while supporting the neck and the head! All four of these vehicles are available today at the Preston Automotive Group.  These vehicles are also all best sellers here!  They fly off the lot almost as soon as they get delivered here.  Be sure to stop in today and take a look at four of the roomiest vehicles available!

Scarcity of Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles

As summer is approaching the demand for sportier cars continues to grow.  For this reason the sportier certified pre-owned cars become harder and harder to find.  In general the certified pre-owned vehicles are in high demand.  They allow vehicle buyers to purchase an almost new vehicle at a much cheaper price.  Not only is the price desirable but the warranty that comes along with the purchase is also great. There are many pros to buying a certified pre-owned vehicle.  The Factory certified pre-owned gives you piece of mind.  The certified pre-owned vehicles go through inspection, repair and warranty.  Due to this you save the time and money it would have taken you to do this yourself and find a good warranty. You also avoid the high up front 20-40 percent depreciation cost that any new car buyer suffers from within the first few years of ownership.  Since the vehicle is factory certified these vehicles typically represent the best deal.  The vehicle has been inspected, the needed repairs have been made and the car has been backed by a factory warranty.  The factory-backed warranty simply means that if you buy a pre-owned Ford then you will have the same coverage you would if you bought a new car from Ford. All certified pre-owned vehicles go through a multipoint inspection.  More details will be taken care of.  For example if the brakes on the vehicle have less than 60 percent life left then they must be replaced. There is also a lot of choice with a used car. Although they can’t be made to order a customer can find a model and option package which might not be made any longer. There are a lot of pre-owned vehicles out there that have only had one owner. The chances of these vehicles being in excellent condition is very high. A car with owner is less likely to have problems with it since many owners of newer model year vehicles keep their vehicles clean if they know they are going to trade it in. Here at the Preston Autoplex we sell five different types of certified pre-owned vehicles.  We have Nissan Certified Pre-owned, Mazda Certified Pre-Owned, Hyundai Certified Pre-Owned, Ford Certified Pre-Owned and lastly Lincoln Certified Pre-Owned.  For most certified pre-owned programs the vehicle must be 6 model years or newer and have fewer than “x” amount of miles on it.

2015 Hyundai Genesis was named an IIHS Top Safety Pick.

The 2015 Hyundai Genesis is the first ever rear wheel drive luxury sedan to earn the highest safety rating! It is the first and only rear wheel drive vehicle in its class to receive the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s highest honor. The Genesis is also the first rear wheel drive vehicle to earn a "Good" rating in the small overlap crash test.  To receive a top safety pick, vehicles must earn “Good” ratings for occupant protection in the moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint test.  They can’t receive any less than “Acceptable” in the small overlap test and at least a basic rating for front crash protection. The IIHS rates vehicles in a moderate overlap front crash, small front crash, side impact as well as rollover test and they also evaluate seat and head restraints for protection against neck injuries.  The small overlap test replicates what happens when the front corner of a vehicle strikes another vehicle or an object such as a tree. In the small overlap test in the Genesis the driver’s space was well maintained.  The injury measures recorded on the driver dummy indicated low risk of any significant injuries. The optional front crash prevention test system which is new for the 2015 year earned the Genesis a superior rating due to its automatic braking capabilities.  In the track tests, the car stopped completely before hitting the target in tests at 12 mph and 25 mph. The 2015 Genesis offers a plethora of safety features which aim to prevent accidents and maximize the safety in the event that you do get in an accident.  The new Genesis uses new Sensory Surround Safety technology including an Automatic Emergency Braking.  These utilize sensor fusion technology to help avoid a potential collision and even reduce its impact.  The Genesis is also equipped with new advanced technologies such as the Intelligent Drive Mode.  This allows you to select between four different drive modes depending on conditions and driving preferences.  There is also a new Blind Spot Detection system which can help you monitor traffic around the car.  One of the most talked about new features in the Hyundai Genesis is the Heads-Up Display, the BSD system indicators also project onto the windshield.  The Lane Change Assist helps to detect vehicles that are approaching towards the rear side at high speeds, especially during high speed driving.  The Rear Cross Traffic Alert scans areas to each side of the car when you are backing out of a parking spot.  It also has the CO2 sensor control system.  This detects when CO2 levels in the vehicle are getting high and will freshly ventilate the vehicle.
